City had taken four out a possible nine points heading into the fixture, and lost their unbeaten record against Chelsea on Monday. But they looked back to somewhere near their best as a goal from David Silva saw off a spirited challenge from the Gunners, and took City two points above Manchester United, who had gone top with a win over QPR earlier in the day.
City were rampant after the goal and should have put the game out of Arsenal's reach on two occasions just after the hour, most glaringly when Samir Nasri somehow fluffed what should have been an easy square ball into the path of Mario Balotelli six yards out. Sergio Aguero was less guilty, drilling narrowly wide from inside the area.
The Gunners weathered the storm - although there was another huge scare when Pablo Zabaleta drilled a shot against the post - and nearly fashioned an equaliser in the 90th minute when Thomas Vermaelen's long-range strike forced Joe Hart into a flying save. But City held on for a win that proves their mettle as title challengers.
